My oldest child, Molly, is now eleven. She and my Mom (her MomMom) have been emailing while my parents are in Florida for a few months. I happened to be copied on their email exchange and loved reading their back-and-forth messages. I stopped and smiled when I read this excerpt from her email:

“Gavin and I each ran for student council at OLM. We didn’t win, but it was still a great experience and I’ll definitely learn from it. Experience just gets me a better chance for next year! And I always think, you always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so try! What’s the worst that can happen? As a celebration for our try, the Mook family is going to the circus! On Thursday at 7:00 we will be going down to the Wells Fargo Center (I think).”

If you follow my writings or have been around our household much, you know that one of our favorite phrases is “You Miss 100% of the Shots You Don’t Take”, which is credited to hockey great Wayne Gretzky. I couldn’t be prouder of my kids as they took shots by running for student council.

They missed, but if they keep shooting they will score plenty in their lives. I am really happy and proud that they absorbed the message and are taking action. Sometimes it’s frustrating when we feel they aren’t listening, but deep down they are taking it all in. Our children really do listen.
